Zoloto Ukrainian Dance Ensemble

In October of 1991, the Zoloto Ukrainian Dance Ensemble had its humble beginnings with only 8 students between the ages of 12 and 17. They, along with our founder and Artistic Director, Keris Matskiw, embarked on the journey that would lead us to where we are today!

This group of incredibly talented dancers have stuck together over all of the speedbumps along the way. They've been together for the happy times, and the sad times in one another's lives and have succeeded due to the family aspect the group has enjoyed from the beginning.

Still under the Artistic Direction of its founder, Keris Matskiw to this very day, much of that success must be credited to her. Keris' amazing talent for choreography, teaching style, and ability to bring a group of dancers of varying abilities together are at the very core of Zoloto's success.

Over the years Zoloto has grown to become one of Canada's most vibrant and entertaining Ukrainian folk dance companies, and has captivated audiences on 3 different continents with their powerful and awe inspiring style of dance.

The Zoloto Ukrainian Dance Ensemble accepts dancers at the age of 16 and offers numerous opportunities for dancers to perform and improve their skills. While previous training in any style of dance is an asset, it isn't necessarily required. Many of the group's most talented dancers have excelled with very little previous training since potential plays a large part in the learning process.

Despite Popular Belief, You don't have to be Ukrainian to Ukrainian dance!! Many of our dancers do not have Ukrainian blood in their veins, but they are Ukrainian in their hearts.

A typical class consists of ballet and stretching exercises, Floor work, and choreography instruction. Workshops with professional choreographers are also often organized. In the past Zoloto has worked with:

  • Jacques Lemay - Former Director and Choreogrpaher for the Royal Winnipeg Ballet.
  • Yuri and Luba Grekov - Former dancers with the Virsky Ensemble. Currently directors of Toronto's Desna Ukrainian Dance Ensemble.
  • George Chrunik -Former Director of Calgary's Tryzub Ensemble. Former Dancer/Instructor with the ukrainian Shumka Dancers.
  • Serhij Koroliuk - Former Director of the Bukovyna State Dance Ensemble, Chernivtsi, Ukraine. Current Director of the Pavlychenko Folklorique Ensemble, Saskatoon.
  • Valery Debelyy and Valentyna Dmytrenko - Directors of the Valery Dance Academy, Winnipeg.

The Ensemble rehearses every Sunday evening from 5:00pm to 9:00pm. A strong commitment to the group's rehearsal and performance schedule is required. Dancers entering the Ensemble are required to be available to perform at the Spirit of Ukraine Pavilion for Folklorama - August 7 to 13, 2016.

Zoloto provides all costumes (except footwear) for performances at no additional charge.
